Jun. 8th, 2011 10:43 pmAlthough I recognize that most of fandom has a vested interest in Neal abandoning his criminal life and turning to the side of good (because otherwise they would have no more Neal/Peter porn), I find Neal more interesting as a criminal. I find his character more interesting when he's a criminal. And when he does criminal things. Even fanfic where Neal ends up off his anklet and then ... chooses to live the good, civilian life so he can continue with the happy OT3 life ... well, it kind of makes me roll my eyes because I don't see Neal ever settling down.
Which is, of course, why I liked tonight's episode. Neal isn't a good person, he merely has certain standards/rules that he follows (one of those being: if someone I know very well and consider a fond acquaintance if not a friend is going to get killed, I will abandon potential windfalls so as to save their life).
I mean, I similarly don't buy fanfic where Peter ... abandons being an FBI agent so he and Elizabeth can join Neal in off-the-grid criminal life. Um. That's antithetical to the very essence of Peter, I feel.
And even though I don't actively ship Peter/Neal (by which I mean I don't seek out to read Peter/Neal fanfic and I don't squee about their moments like I do Parker/Hardison in Leverage), one of the most interesting things I find about Peter/Neal isn't the owner-owned dynamic so much as the ... the Cops & Robbers dynamic? The two guys on two different sides of the law dynamic? I'm sure there's a shorter phrase to describe it.
But I mean, I'm also one of the few people who rolled my eyes a few seasons ago and decided White Collar was one of the few shows where the two leads communicated too much (as opposed to other shows where all misunderstandings would be solved if they simply communicated).
Side Note: Dear Covert Affairs & Hulu: WTF. You were available on Hulu 45 minutes ago, when I started watching White Collar, and now you're NOT? If I had known you were going to do this, I would have watched you FIRST and White Collar SECOND.
