So the thing I love about fandom is that people in fandom are very smart and come up with all the plot twists before they actually happen. I mean, in Harry Potter, when I read the seventh book, Snape being in love with Lily was nothing new, nor was the fact that Harry was a Horcrux. I wasn't spoiled, I'd merely heard these theories before (among many) and given them enough thought that it didn't seem out of the blue to me.

Now maybe some people would be sad this didn't shock them, but I think it's more fun my way.

So when the Other Doctor With The Jacket Sleeve theory was posited way back when, I thought it was completely ridiculous, and then when it played out on screen, I thought it was awesome and amazing and also that the person who'd spotted the wardrobe difference was GENIUS.

And here, with the revelation that River is Amy's daughter, it's kind of like ... okay, nothing new here. Moving on to the next plot point!

I kind of think this is awesome and think this is terrible at the same time. I have a HUGE issue with age gaps and power differentials in relationships, so of course I am so NOT a fan of, you know, the Doctor finding young Melody/River and bringing her up because I do not approve of people rearing/molding children who end up being their love interests. (I think this is gross, which I recognize is because I am a product of my times, and this is why classic books like Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm and Daddy Long-Legs and certain books by L. M. Montgomery all get the side-eye from me.)

But the alternative that would be acceptable to me is one where Melody grows up to be an adult River Song before she ever gets the chance to meet her parents and/or the Doctor, which would be a fascinating story but also a completely tragic one.

Also, I'm still not perfectly clear why the Doctor decided to leave everyone behind and go off in the TARDIS by himself?

In conclusion, I can't believe the next episode is not until SEPTEMBER.

Oh, I think he went off on the TARDIS to go meet River for the first time. In fact, when I first saw the episode, I thought it was so obvious, that I didn't realize I had just made a logical leap until I was talking with some people and they had no idea what I was talking about. It's from their conversation - the Doctor checks with River that he looks OK, and she says something like, "you'd better look good." At first I thought he was going to turn around and say something to Rory, but when he popped in the TARDIS I was like, "Oh, he's going to meet River for the first time. Oh."

That said, "...the alternative that would be acceptable to me is one where Melody grows up to be an adult River Song before she ever gets the chance to meet her parents and/or the Doctor, which would be a fascinating story but also a completely tragic one."

Too tragic for me! No, really. I don't think I could hanlde it if Amy and Rory just abandoned baby!River until she was old enough for the Doctor to find her. The tragedy is just too much. *hugs Pond family*

Hmmm ... I think I assumed that the Doctor was going off to find River but I wasn't sure why he had to leave everyone behind. Or why he couldn't drop everyone off back home and then go see River. (But then, a lot of times on Doctor Who when they run short on time I roll my eyes because ... time machine.) Or why he had to leave Amy/Rory behind if he's going to meet her because ... I understand boyfriends are important but I'd think parents are even more so?

But yeah, I don't think Amy/Rory would abandon baby!River, I just don't think it would be so easy to find her ...
