I am going through the Mark Reads and Mark Re-Reads writeups of Harry Potter, and one thing that really stands out to me is how much fun it was reading the Harry Potter books as they came out, with the rest of fandom alongside me.

Because the thing is, fandom is smart. And brimming with theories. I mean seriously! Fandom caught on to Arabella Figg before I did (and wrote long gratuitous fics about her as the new DaDA professor). Fandom caught onto the significance of R.A.B. = Regulus Black = locket from Book 5 when I would have forgotten it.

Nothing in Book 7 surprised me too much because all of the out-there stuff was a theory that had at one time or other already been proposed by somebody in fandom. Seriously. I'd read fics about all the major plot twists. This didn't spoil the book for me or ruin it for me because there were also umpty-million theories and ideas and fics that weren't in the final book, but it was tons of fun.

When did you start reading Mark Reads?

Yesterday? Two days ago? Something like that. It is very addictive, so it is currently my source of motivation, i.e. "If I do X, I can read one chapter"

You and D. both. When I was in Seattle she was raving about his reviews so I ended up reading them. And the Doctor Who ones. And now Avatar...

I've also been rec'ing him to a lot of people...

I've been hearing good things about his reviews for a while now, so I was like, whatever, I'm kind of over Harry Potter. But! But! But! But he started reviewing Avatar and I was like ... Hmm ...

So I read through all his Avatar reviews, then all his Firefly reviews, then all his Doctor Who reviews (for the episodes I've seen) and! And! And! And I now actually want to WATCH all those episodes I haven't seen yet so I can read those reviews!

And I'd bookmarked the HP reviews for when I had time but the I started reading them and I couldn't stop! I mean, it was so much fun! He ACTUALLY THOUGHT SNAPE WAS EVIL in the first book! His spoiler-free-ness is so cute! And that's when I reined myself in (yesterday when I got home from work) and started spoonfeeding them to myself only after tasks have been accmplished. Like: cleaning 10% of my bathroom earns me 2 chapters. Each student evaluation I do earns my one chapter. Each bullet point of translation earns me one chapter. Etc. I'm getting work done! It's amazing!

You are so adorable. :)

How far are you in his HP reviews?

I just finished Goblet of Fire (I cheated, okay! I decided that showering earned me like elveventy-billion chapters and now I'm trying to convince myself that DELAYED GRATIFICATION, i.e. saving up chapters to use as motivational tools is more important than INSTANT GRATIFICATION, i.e. reading all his reviews NOW. Instant gratification is winning.)
