For the record.

I love River Song. I ALSO love Rose and Martha and Donna and Amy. I love them all equally and do not favor any one over the others, and I do not like hearing negative criticisms of them, especially not along the lines of "Donna is old and ugly" (Seriously? You see Donna for the first time, and this is what you say? "Why is she so old? Why is she ugly?") or "River Song is grating" or "Amy is shouty".

I love Hermione. I love Ginny. I simply cannot comprehend the kind of mentality that deliberately goes out of their way to reading Ginny-bashing fanfic because they hate her so much. Because no, I do NOT think she is a Mary Sue, I do NOT think Tonks is a Mary Sue, what I DO think is that you're sexist.

I have little to no emotional investment in Torchwood because I've only seen enough episodes to get a basic background, but writing a fanfic where in part of the plot, Gwen ~comes to a revelation~ that she is actually very selfish and mean and terrible and does not treat Ianto and Jack nicely enough means I give you a sideways look. Also, if you are the same person who wrote a fanfic where Gwen tries too hard to be friends with Ianto and Tosh but secretly they find her super annoying, you know what, you have an issue.

You know, I rarely dislike female characters unless they are presented as the villain (see: Dolores Umbridge), so maybe it's because I automatically like nearly all female characters that I do not understand this attitude. But some of the justifications people have for disliking a character are ... incomprehensible to me.

And you know, my love for female characters knows no bounds. SOMETIMES IT EVEN EXTENDS TO REAL PEOPLE.

So if you think Kristen Bell is ugly/a bad actress because you are upset with recent plot developments in Veronica Mars, that is NOT the best way to vent. So if you criticize actresses for being weak and not being good enough/strong enough/talented enough to pull off a role, that is an ENTIRELY subjective opinion as PLENTY of people on the Internet think otherwise.

And by the way, I do NOT appreciate you thinking Hillary Clinton is a robot and/or power-hungry and/or creepy/evil/ugly/old.

If it were just the Internet, I wouldn't mind as much because people are going to have misogynistic opinions and write misogynistic fic about female characters. It happens.

But when I watch Doctor Who with RL friends and/or discuss fanfic with RL friends, I would like to do it in a manner where I do not have to hear all your FUCKING HATE ON WOMEN AND WOMEN CHARACTERS poisoning my squee.

DAMN SKIPPY.

I am currently watching White Collar fandom - which was delightfully free of misogyny and related wank for the show's first one and a half seasons - go down this path and it makes me so sad. Why why WHY must we do this, not only to characters on a show or to the actresses that play them, but also to each other?

I'm sorry you're dealing with it IRL, too. I wish stupidity were limited to the internet, but alas, it is not so.
