One thing I've missed about jdramas -- how short and unrepentantly cheesy they are. It's refreshing to start and finish a shot, 10-ep drama so easily.

As for the cheesiness -- it's just so much fun how jdramas are willing to have a repeated episodic thing. For example, Gokusen had Yankumi beat up someone at the end of every episode after taking off her glasses and taking out her hair. Yankee to Megane-chan had a similar thing with Adachi. And here, Toma does her calligraphy/thinking thing. Which is awesome.

So of course I loved the supernatural stuff (though I have to wonder, as this is "Keizoku 2", whether Keizoku the first was about this at all, and I'm inclined to think not), and the plot kept me entertained and then ...

I should start by explaining that I do NOT ship Toma/Shibumi. I'm not sure why, but I'm very anti-Toma/Shibumi. For this reason, I very much shipped Toma with her ex-boyfriend, who I thought was cute and adorable.

(Yeah...)

And then the final episode happened, which, by the way, the whole Nonomae twist was EPICALLY AMAZING. It's the kind of thing that makes sense in retrospect but which I actually totally wasn't expecting at all.

And then, there was the ex-boyfriend thing.

So I was totally hilarious amazed and excited when it turned out her ex-boyfriend was the supervillain, and I loved it lots. And I have to say, I shipped Toma/ex-boyfriend even more.

(Then, he got more psychotic and it turned out practically all of their memories together were faked, and then I ... did not ship them as much at all.)

See, the thing is, I obviously don't shipped memory-wiped!Toma with her stalker-creepy!ex-boyfriend. But I do kind of like the idea of the two of them fighting each other and being enemies and yet have that UST that they will not ever act on as she tries to corner him and he flirts and taunts and escapes. Of course, that idea is all shot to hell because Toma does not actually LIKE him at all. Which I think was an interesting reflection on the whole idea of memories and how much they can or cannot influence your emtions.

I have to say, I still don't understand the last part. I understood that Toma developed her brother's power b/c it was genetic or something and she was always capable of accessing that other 90% of her brain if she wanted to BUT right before that? With the whole chess game between ex-boyfriend and the monk? And the ex-boyfriend ... became Tsuda? I'm not quite sure I understand what all that was about.

In other news, I was thinking today ...

In my many years reading fanfic, I have come across:

1. A Sailor Moon AU fanfic/fusion with Meteor Garden (Okay, technically, it was probably Hana Yori Dango), where Usagi was Makino and Mamoru was Domyouji.
2. A Sailor Moon AU fanfic/fusion with 环珠格格 (Princess Returning Pearl) where Usagi was 小燕子 (understandably) and Mamoru was ... uh ... the Emperor. Which is kind of weird, but I'm sure they would have changed the plot enough that it wasn't vaguely incestuous.
3. A Harry Potter AU fanfic/fusion with 射雕英雄传 (Legend of the Condor Heroes) where Godric Gryffindor was Guo Jing and Salazar Slytherin was Yang Kang.

None of them were well-written, per se, but it warmed my heart to see references to canons generally little-known in English-speaking fandom. (At least, 2 and 3 are. Number 1 I read before I even watched Meteor Garden, much less before I read Hana Yori Dango.)

(And we just won't speak of my failed attempt to write a Harry Potter AU fanfic set in Qing Dynasty China ...)
