Today, I
1. Added more fanfiction-generating sources to my flist, to keep my life more interesting.
2. Tried to join one or two more fandoms by simply reading their wikipedia entry, because I was too tired to actually go through the motions but wanted to read the fanfic without being confused.
3. Decided that I was really too tired of generic, sweet romances between my preferred ships and wanted fanfic that couldn't have its character's names find-and-replaced with character names from other fandoms, and have an equally meaningful fanfic.
4. Decided I was too addicted to angst for my own good -- I don't actually like it, but get grumpy when there isn't any, and only really like it so I can find out what happens at the end -- skipping most of the angsty bits in the process.
AND
5. Did NOT work on my 20-page paper due in 61 hours that I have not started.

Date: 2008-04-06 10:52 am (UTC)Fanfiction is like crack. I don't want to think of the number of days I've probably wasted in my life on reading fanfic, but I'd like to think that I've learned a lot as a reader and writer in the process. I do the Wikipedia fandom thing, too (I YouTube clips as well), just so that I know what my friends are talking about.
I'm terribly bored by generic stories - I'm a sucker for stories with Deep Insights About Our Characters or failing that, The Human Condition. I'm generally intrigued by angst, but it's difficult to find ones that are well-written without being maudlin or cliché. I've read more blah hurt/comfort and near-death stories than I can count as the nature of my chief fandom lends itself well to such themes. Part of the appeal of angst is that you get conflict, which hopefully leads to character development and a sense of personal interest in the way the narrative tension is resolved (or how it isn't).
