Geeky observation
Dec. 11th, 2004 06:28 pmSo ... I bombed a math contest today, and realized that I meet way too many people I know at these math contests.
I walk in the door and spend half an hour talking to Marlene. Then I say hi to Jing, Connie, and Chao in that order. As I am conducted to the gym, I am pulled aside so that Tian/Qian (I thought it was Tian, but my mom said it was Qian, and it's really not my fault that I don't now because I was only actually introdcued to her, like, once, and nobody ever bothered to tell me how her name was actually spelled, and it sounds the same when Americanized anyways) so she can known who Jimmy Li is. And on my way up the stands, I am hallooed to (sort of) by Cissy.
All Chinese school people (except for Tian/Qian, who is a friend of a friend who is a Chiense-school-person).
And then, I had lunch with Chao (who was forbidden to sit with me at the awards ceremony because I'm from Central -- although she might have been joking) and I learned that I won not a single thing except the team test (on which I don't even know if the answers I contributed were correct), so you can count that as borrowing the entire team's glory) and the sweepstakes (our school goot second0, the trophy that everyone else was too lazy to get up and retrieve, and as I was closest to the aisle, they delegated me to stand up, shake random people's hands, grab the trophy, and retreat.
But don't let anyone ever tell you math contests aren't exciting. They are when you know what to look for (the undercurrents of competition, I-can't-wait-to-rub-this-in-so-and-so's-face, the anger, resentment, fear, disappointment, and overall ... er .... let's just stop parenthesizing, shall we?).
Umm ... that's the end of my geeky note. Although now that I think about it, I really resent the way society has influenced me into labelling things like these observations "geeky" almost automatically ...

Date: 2004-12-12 05:32 pm (UTC)2) Who the hell is Jimmy Li?
3) ...you really are like Alex Song. he didn't do well yesterday either.
4) Math competitions are pretty awesome...they, like debate tournaments/quiz bowl skirmishes, are basically gigantic asian/geek conventions.
5) In conclusion, it's good to be a geek.
