Title: 20 Things That Happened While Naruto Was Gone, In No Particular Order
Fandom: Naruto
Rating: R (? PG-13? -ish?)
Warning: Not quite beta'd

1. While Naruto was gone, Tenten and Hinata went up against each other in the third round of their chuunin exams. Tenten hadn't underestimated Hinata per se, but had made the mistaken assumption that her numerous training sessions with Neji meant she understood the Byakugan inside and out. And planned her attacks accordingly.

She understood Neji's Byakugan inside and out. Hinata's was quite different, she quickly learned. To her chagrin.

Tenten won the battle, eventually, but it was long and hard and she was heavily injured by the end. Hinata, on the other hand, more than proved herself that day. Hinata made chuunin after that exam. Tenten didn't.

2. While Naruto was gone, Sakura lost her virginity to Lee. They had a brief relationship (but filled with passion fueled by the Flames of Youth!) before Sakura told Lee that even if she didn't love Sasuke anymore, she still pined over him. It wasn't fair to Lee to continue the relationship until or unless Sasuke came back and there was closure. (Unspoken between them was the idea that any relationship Sakura pursued required some kind of blessing from Naruto.) That night, Neji and Tenten had to do everything within their power to keep Lee from falling into sake. Neither Neji nor Tenten has quite warmed up to Sakura since, even though Lee is as cheerfully friendly as ever.

3. While Naruto was gone, the Ichiraku ramen stand almost went out of business. It was Chouji who led the campaign to keep Ichiraku from being closed down. The Godaime agreed. Everyone else helped out. Sakura sponsored a motion to preserve it on account of its historical status, while Ino stood outside the stand in skimpy clothing and with a huge sign to advertise it (only at the earnest behest of Chouji). Lee fundraised for the stand (by betting people that he could run 500 laps for each donation they made), and Tenten reluctantly helped with advertising. It went on in this vein. Needless to say, the ramen stand stayed in business.

4. While Naruto was gone, Tenten and Temari went up against each other in the final round of their chuunin exam. (This was after the one where Tenten fought Hinata, needless to say. Also needless to say, Tenten was overjoyed to pay back Temari from the humiliating defeat from previously.) Tenten finally did defeat Temari, with great difficulty, overcoming the natural disadvantage she had based on the style of her fighting and relying heavily on the fact that she knew a great deal about Temari's fighting style. Both proved themselves and made chuunin.

5. While Naruto was gone, Shino was formally betrothed to a civilian girl by his family. She moved into the Aburame compound, although she and Shino never really saw each other.

6. While Naruto was gone, Konohamaru almost died on his first genin mission. It was a D-rank turned S-rank, and while Ebisu was well-enough equipped to deal with the missing-nin on his own, he was outmatched when it came to protecting himself and all three of his charges. They were rescued (or, helped) by Sakura and Hinata, who had been returning from a joint Special Kunoichi mission.

7. Because while Naruto was gone, Ino, Hinata, Sakura, and Tenten were each sent on a number of kunoichi missions apiece. Konoha was shorthanded. They were needed. They did not complain, nor did they tell their teammates. You don't complain about having to dress in skimpy clothing in order to distract the target you are about to kill, even though such a compromise of morals was typically restricted to Special Jounin and ANBU. It was just something they had to do, because Konoha needed its nin to go above and beyond their normal call of duty.

8. While Naruto was gone, Ino stopped wanting to be a medic-nin and lost her virginity. In the same night. (To Kiba, by the way.)

9. As a matter of fact, while Naruto was gone, ever single one of the Rookie Nine plus Three lost their virginity. Even Sasuke, over in Sound, lost his to a two-bit prostitute. Naruto's first time was with a friendly wench at one of Jiraiya's pit stops. Kiba's first was actually with another Inuzuka (related distantly if at all) who hadn't been satisfied by his premature ejaculation, and had screeched at him for it. Shino lost his in the betrothal ceremony with his fiancée that he didn't know. Neji and Tenten can be imagined. Hinata sought out Kiba the night before her first kunoichi mission, just in case.

10. In case you hadn't noticed, Kiba became quite the player while Naruto was gone. He was a fan with the ladies particularly because word of mouth had it that the unsatisfied first, the Inuzuka, had trained him until he never disappointed again.

11. While Naruto was gone, three different girls in three different villages developed an unrequited crush on him. He learned to become quite suave with the ladies. Helped in part, no doubt, by the number of time he needed to charm himself out of situations the lecherous Jiraiya had gotten them into.

12. While Naruto was gone, the Godaime wen through three different sculptors before one finally designed a carving of her face that satisfied. As the Godaime thought, having your face on a huge hunk of rock that people could see for miles around was important enough that she wanted a pretty one.

13. While Naruto was gone, Shikamaru (who had long since figured out the whole Kyuubi-business) ordered a semi-informal meeting of the Rookies (capitalized), and laid the situation out for them because he figured if he didn't now, then Naruto would have yet another hurdle to overcome when he came back. They all took it fairly well, considering.

13. While Naruto was gone, Neji and Shino easily became chuunin. Interestingly enough, the two of them did end up fighting each other in the final round of their chuunin exam, after already completely trouncing the ninja from the other villages. The two fought to a draw. (Both completely cut off the source of the other's chakra. After that point, it was useless to go on.)

14. While Naruto was gone, Sakura was last of the rookies from Konoha to make chuunin. This wasn't because she was weakest, or because she failed a number of chuunin exams. The Godaime simply refused to enter her. She was not just any genin, she was the Godaime's apprentice. As such, she was particularly representative of Konoha's power, and the Godaime's power. If she lost a match, or even if she won and didn't make chuunin, the other hidden villages and clients would look down on Godaime's power. The year Sakura took the chuunin exam, the Godaime entered no other candidate from Konoha. She was the sole representative of the Hidden Leaf.

Needless to say, she made chuunin easily.

15. One of the people she steamrolled across while Naruto was gone happened to be Kankurou, who had missed the last few chuunin exams because of freak occurrences (such as contracting mono unexpectedly, breaking a leg the day before, and accidentally being shut in a closet to avoid his latest paramour's husband who had unexpectedly returned home). Needless to say, Kankurou was a bit miffed.

16. While Naruto was gone, Gaara became Kazekage. His first act was to sign a permanent treaty with Konoha (which was only as permanent as these treaties get, which is to say as well as can be expected but don't keep your hopes up). The second was to tease Kankurou mercilessly for still being a genin when his younger brother was Kazekage already.

This wasn't Kankurou's fault. First of all, Gaara rose through the ranks incredibly quickly. Secondly, Kankurou didn't attend the first few chuunin exams because they were too busy rebuilding Sunakagure. They sent some Sand shinobi as a show of strength, but he was directly involved in supervising reconstruction and couldn't be spared. Then there were the freak incidents, involving disease and disability and hiding in the daimyo's closet because if his adultery were known, inter-village relations would no doubt become nonexistent. And then during the chuunin exam with Sakura, he had so completely underestimated her (nobody had seen Sakura in action for forever) that he had been so soundly defeated, it had been embarrassing. Poor Kankurou.

17. While Naruto was gone, Shino's unknown civilian fiancée who was staying in the Aburame compound was caught sleeping with his cousin. There was a quiet scandal, but things were eventually taken care of. The betrothal was broken, of course.

18. While Naruto was gone, Gaara's student (eventually) made chuunin, just before Naruto returned. As the Kazekage's apprentice, she was Sand's only representative. She won, though not quite as easily as Sakura. (She hadn't been in training for as long as Sakura, but Sand didn't have many ninja to send, as it was still recovering. She proved herself.)

19. While Naruto was gone, not a single day would go pass without some conversation about him. Sakura talked about him and Sasuke whenever she had time, of course. She was lonely as the only remaining member of her rookie team in Konoha. Ino kept her old friend company, even if it meant discussing Naruto's well-being occasionally. Chouji would assure Naruto was fine and probably eating ramen. And Shikamaru would sigh. The Godaime often wondered where he was and how he was doing. Morino Ibiki made it his personal business to keep an eye on Naruto (or an ear out, whatever). Kiba would grumble (constantly) about that first chuunin exam when he had been so soundly defeated by Naruto, even after he finally made chuunin. And Shino would tell him to shut about it, that they had heard enough. And Hinata would just sigh at the mention of Naruto and both her teammates would wonder if she would ever get over or confess her crush. And we won't even talk about Gaara's slight admiration (coughcrushcough) of Naruto.

20. While Naruto was gone, he wasn't forgotten.

<3.

14 is so close to my personal canon it's scary.

I'll be in the corner with the bits of Shino's story you've included, btw.

I also really love 6/7. ;)

This came into being when I started listing a lot of things I thought must have happened while Naruto was gone. And then, after around 14-ish, I said to myself "I should make it a nice whole number --- how about 20?" And then I had to find more things. So I expanded on some, and randomly made up others, and totally miscounted at one point and that I had 20 ... when I really had 19 Anyways, thank you for the review!

I love the idea. Love it. And I love how random some of these are. My favorites are 12 and 14. Oh, and Kiba in 9. LMAO.
