Well, the Circle of Magic series by Tamora Pierce may be one of my favorite book series ever, but it does tend to skew to the younger end of the YA spectrum. (Or at least, it does according to the libraries I check it out at, which have always labeled it Grades 7-9). I would still recommend it, especially as the themes/tones of the books mature as the characters grow up, and because I really enjoy it. :)
