Apr. 10th, 2011 09:51 pmSo someone dropped my laptop yesterday. (Ugh. You know, I feel like if you do a favor for someone, karmically, they shouldn't drop your laptop.)
And now it (the fan, I think) occasionally makes a weird buzzing noise. But it's very low in volume, is not all the time, and my computer seems to be working fine.
Should I be worried? I am planning on backing up my laptop tomorrow night regardless, but how likely is my laptop have to have the electronic equivalent of internal injuries that will bleed out on me any moment now?

Date: 2011-04-10 02:31 pm (UTC)-- Dropping it might have damaged the fan, which can lead to overheating, which *can* lead to catastrophic laptop death.
-- Was the laptop on when it was dropped?
-- How far did it drop, and what kind of surface did it land on?
-- Does your laptop have some sort of hard drive protection? (The name varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but it's basically a utility that detects movement/vibration and protects the mechanical hard drive parts from potential damage, because hard drives are the most vulnerable part in a laptop).
Definitely back it up, and if you notice any other symptoms like an excessive clicking sound, excessive heat, things like USB ports malfunctioning or the fan noise continuing, take it in. Repair would be cheaper than a new laptop depending on the age of the laptop.
