Summary: All of the young kunoichi of Konoha, or at least all of the ones we are concerned about, have wanted to be medic-nin at some point in their lives. All for different reasons.

Tenten has always idolized Tsunade. She used to entertain dreams of apprenticing under the legendary Sannin as a medic-nin, so she could be a great kunoichi, too. She gave up on that dream when she realized her expertise lay in weaponry, but she still felt a pang when (silly, useless) Sakura (who gave kunoichi such a bad name during the chuunin exam) was accepted as Tsunade's apprentice. It was a brief pang, though, easily dismissed. She would only have made an average medic-nin, anyways, whereas now she was already on her way to being a great weapons mistress.

Hinata used to idolize medic-nins, secretly yearning to be one. A chance comment from her father one day, a carelessly dropped “at least she can make a decent medic-nin” gave her the impression that medic-nin was all she was worth. Even if she never became a great kunoichi, becoming a decent medic-nin was the next best thing. Eventually, she discovered two things. Firstly, that although she could make a decent medic-nin, she had the makings of a great kunoichi within her. Secondly, that the career of the medic-nin was worth more than second choice.

Ino tried her hand at being a medic-nin once, after she had seen just how much power Sakura had gained through her training, through a mistaken belief that the same route would help her develop her own power. But after she asked Tsunade if she could be her apprentice too, Tsunade took her aside and had a quiet talk with her, after which Ino realized that it was simply no use trying to improve herself by following in other people's footsteps. To grow strong, she would have to find her own path. A path that wouldn't involve chakra control.

It was ironic, really. Sakura never wanted to be a medic-nin. Not originally. It wasn't that she set out not to be one, but she had just never considered it seriously. But when Sasuke betrayed the Leaf and ran off (because she was too weak) and Naruto was training almost exclusively with Jiraiya (because she was too weak), then it made sense for her to seek her own teacher who would teach her what she needed to know – Tsunade (so she would no longer be weak). It was never about being a medic-nin. It was about becoming stronger.
