Literary Snobbishness
May. 1st, 2011 12:40 pmI was just thinking about how someone online mentioned they didn't like Hunger Games because they felt naming the country Panem was too heavyhanded, a reference to Panem et Circenses, a reference I never got. I mentally called them snooty.
But then, I'm guilty of the exact same thing. I never liked Julie Kagawa's ... uh, Iron King, I think the first book was, because I felt like the protagonist was dim. I felt like if your best friend is named Robin Goodfell, that is a huge hint that he is Puck. That's not enough a hint. That's spelling it out for you. Obviously, though, while I might have picked up on this reference from the first page he was introduced, this will not be true for everyone. So I am being snooty.
