Mar. 17th, 2011 02:36 amHave been wading through a large slush of mediocre and just-slightly-above-average fic lately (there was a rec list by someone who was more listing not-terrible fanfics with my OTP, and less listing actually amazing fanfics), and I have come to the following conclusions.
1. You know how there's that mediocre fic where you finish, and you're like, "Eh, wasn't terrible." When you read five in a row in the same fandom with the same pairing, then you start to be more and more critical, and the not-terrible ones become more "Ugh, not again." The lack of originality, failure to build up to a climax, and very-just-slightly OOC-ness all start to grate on your nerves until you get the urge to throw something at the next fic, even though it's not actually that bad! It's just not very good.
2. Naruto fandom is oh my GOD so sexist. It's not even a matter of overt sexism, so much as the narrative sees a society where men and women are unequal and, instead of critically addressing the issue as some more brilliant fics have done, proceeds to reinforce it. Your ass-kicking rough-edged female ninja who canonically has never shown an interest in typically feminine pursuits nearly always turns to domesticity to express true love. I mean, there's nothing wrong with domesticity in theory, but the way it's presented in these recent slough of fanfics is making me roll my eyes. I never realized a how mediocre fanfic could plummet into dreck with such subtle touches.
